Combine a clean ivory base, one sweeping navy accent and a fine edge line for a modern birthday cake. This Kumora guide interprets the reference image; it does not claim to reproduce the original creator’s recipe or methods.

A little preparation

Before you start

  • Smooth chilled round cake
  • Ivory and navy buttercream
  • Small palette knife and fine round piping tip
  • Parchment for stroke practice
  • Optional edible bow
01

Reserve a large clean area

The reference works because most of the top is left quiet. Decide which side will hold the navy shape and keep the greeting opposite it. Draw a paper circle with the intended area shaded before mixing the accent color.

Use a navy shade that reads against ivory without needing to cover the entire cake. Test a small smear beside the base color. A tiny amount of dark icing can make a strong statement, so prepare the accent separately from the main batch.

02

Make one confident shape

Chill the base until a light palette-knife touch will not lift it. Load a small amount of navy icing, touch down near the edge and sweep inward. Lift away to leave a tapered end. Practice on parchment to understand how much pressure produces the width you want.

Add one smaller related stroke if needed. Avoid repeatedly brushing over the same patch: the colors can smear together and turn a deliberate shape into a muddy area. Let the original texture remain visible.

03

Add a fine outline

Pipe a thin line close to the top edge, rotating the cake slowly and keeping steady pressure. A perfectly circular outline is difficult by hand, so test the movement first. If a full line is beyond your comfort level, leave it out rather than surrounding a clean design with an uneven heavy rope.

A small dark bow or piped knot on the side repeats the accent color. Keep it subordinate to the brushstroke. Use edible material, or keep any decorative ribbon separated from food contact and remove it before serving.

04

Letter in the open space

Keep the inscription to a few words in fine piping. Practice at the final size and mark its center lightly. The text should not touch the navy shape or compete with the edge line.

Inspect the cake under normal room light, not only beside a bright window. Dark blue can appear almost black in low light. Photograph from above and at a slight angle to show how the top stroke connects to the side accent.

The little details

  • Stop after a good first stroke; repeated correction often removes its character.
  • Reserve a clean spatula for ivory repairs so navy does not contaminate the base.

Your questions, answered

Can I use another accent color?

Yes. Deep green, burgundy or chocolate brown can work with the same spacious layout. Test contrast before applying.

Do I need an edible paint?

No. This version uses colored buttercream applied with a palette knife. It is an interpretation of the visible design, not a claim about the original materials.
