Create a dark romantic cake with sculpted borders, restrained roses and optional black accents, in a heart or round shape. This Kumora guide interprets the reference image; it does not claim to reproduce the original creator’s recipe or methods.

A little preparation

Before you start

  • Heart-shaped or round cake with a stable coat
  • Deep red buttercream and a little darker accent icing
  • Star, petal and fine round piping tips
  • Parchment and a paper layout guide
01

Build depth without using many colors

The reference relies on burgundy relief against a related dark base. Mix the background and piping shades together as a planned palette, then keep one slightly lighter so the details do not disappear. Test a shell and a rose on a smear of the base color.

Use a frosting recipe suitable for deep coloring and add color gradually. Taste as you work; chasing a near-black red with excessive coloring can change the result. Rest and reassess the shade according to your coloring product’s guidance.

02

Set the rhythm with borders

On a heart cake, mark the front point and shoulders before dividing the sides. On a round cake, make evenly spaced anchor marks. Pipe the lower border first, then the side swags, and finish the top edge.

Keep each swag shallow enough to leave room for the lower decoration. Repeat the same shell size around the perimeter and correct your hand pressure on parchment if the pattern begins to drift. The repeated geometry gives the dark color structure.

03

Add roses only where they help

Place a few deeper roses at the shoulders of a heart or in an uneven group on a round cake. Let the base remain visible between them. A fully covered top can flatten the vintage details into one dark mass.

The round variation can skip roses entirely and let large shells and hanging swags carry the design. Reserve a clean center for a short inscription. Test pale lettering if dark lettering would be lost against the base.

04

Interpret ribbon details carefully

Black accents can be piped or modeled from edible material. If you use decorative fabric ribbon, keep it separated from direct food contact and remove it before serving. Do not hide pins or wire inside edible-looking decorations.

Use side lighting to reveal the relief in photographs. A little distance between cake and background helps the dark silhouette remain visible. For transport, keep swags clear of the box walls and bring a small repair bag.

The little details

  • A slightly lighter red border can read better than an all-black accent.
  • Choose either a dense top border or a large rose cluster before adding both.

Your questions, answered

Can I use chocolate frosting underneath?

Yes, if it suits your chosen recipe and coloring plan. Test the final color on a small sample first.

How do I make the round variation?

Keep the same border order and use evenly spaced side anchors. A clean round top works well with fewer flowers and a short center message.
