What you’ll need
- Small round cake with a firm base coat
- Light and dark green plus pink buttercream
- Fine piping tips and small offset spatula
- Edible modeled or piped eye shapes
- Paper face template
Separate rind, fruit and face
Plan the side as a green rind and the top as pink fruit. The character details should sit where the front of the cake will be presented. Mark that front on the board before frosting so the stripes and face align.
Use a light green base with a darker green for irregular vertical stripes. Choose a soft pink that remains distinct from the green. A few colors are enough; extra bright accents can distract from the frog expression.
Make irregular rind stripes
Smooth the side coating and let it firm enough to take an added color. Apply narrow darker green strokes from top toward bottom, varying the edges slightly. Watermelon stripes need not be mechanically identical.
Keep the strokes relatively thin. If the dark color drags the base with it, chill again and use a lighter touch. Finish the top in pink, leaving a small green edge visible so the fruit illusion reads clearly from above.
